A Canadian Gospel Coalition Conference

March 30th, 2012 Posted in Conferences

The Ontario Chapter of The Gospel Coalition will hold its second regional conference, May 29–31, 2012, at Heritage College and Seminary in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.

The theme of the conference is “The Priority of the Gospel.” Plenary speakers Don Carson, John Neufeld and Stephen Um will address this topic using Philippians 1–4. As a special feature, David Short will speak on “Striving for the Faith of the Gospel: The St. John’s Vancouver Anglican Church Story”. There will also be a variety of excellent workshops. The organizers believe this conference will strengthen, encourage and challenge pastors and Christian leaders in their gospel-centered ministries.

While the conference is aimed at pastors, leaders and students of pastoral ministry, all are welcome to attend. The early bird deadline ends on April 1st so register soon to receive the best rate.

A Needed Balance

“Let us cultivate the most cordial esteem for all that love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. …but let us aim, at the same time, to acquire and retain the most accurate conceptions of religious truth.”

Who said this? None other than Robert Hall, Jr., who is sometimes seen as lax in the second of these two admonitions. I am so glad that Pastor Cody McNutt has done a PhD thesis on Hall at Southern, hopefully a progenitor of an intellectual biography of a man who was the first Baptist celebrity of the 19th century (that is, before Spurgeon). He defends it in a few weeks.

For the source of the above quote, see Hall’s “Introductory Preface to the Third London Edition” of his father’s Help to Zion’s Travellers (Boston: Lincoln, Edmands and Co., 1833), xv.

Churches Reintroducing Old Hymns for a New Day

March 3rd, 2012 Posted in Hymnody, Music

Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, KY is among a group of churches, ministries, and bands which are seeking to reintroduce the rich, theological truths of the ancient hymns to a new generation. This post on the Gospel Coalition blog contains more information about this movement as well as the video of a helpful discussion on why this trend is important.
