Warfield, his greatness as a theologian
Reading Fred Zaspel’s tremendous doctoral thesis on B.B. Warfield and I agree fully with him that it says much that the sesquicentennial of Warfield’s birth—2001—passed virtually unnoticed. I would agree with Fred that Warfield was the greatest theologian of the twentieth century—much more important in the cause of God than that darling of wayward Evangelicals, Karl Barth!
Love this remark by Gresham Machen about Warfield, who was his mentor: “With all his glaring faults he was the greatest man I have known.”

Is he almost done that thesis yet? I see him tomorrow. I’ll have to bother him about it! Looking forward to reading it myself!

Yes, he is all but finished.

I wonder if he wrestles with Warfield’s acceptance of thesistic evolution. Modernity was bearing down hard on these fine conservative theologians of the early 20th century (including our own Augustus Strong). It sounds like a needful research project…

Actually Chris, Fred Z sets the record straight re Warfield and evolution. The case is far more complex than some have made out. But history is often that way!
