“Old men ought to be explorers”

December 10th, 2008 Posted in Poetry

My love for poetry grows as I grow older, for thereĀ are some things about this world that can only be expressed in poetic form.

Recently I came across another fabulous line in T.S. Eliot’s poem “East Coker”, which is part of my favourite work of his, The Four Quartets: “Old men ought to be explorers.”

How true!

What are young men to do?

TS Eliot doesn’t say. But that is a good question. Your thoughts?

Hey it was great to see you last week!

At what point does one become old? How tragic when old men become rigid over the wrong things. May God give us grace to finish well!

Michael, It’s such a long time ago since I was in that category, but the Scripture intunction is paramount - “Study to show thyself approved unto God…” (2 Tim. 2:15, AV). It is my firm conviction that once the study of God’s word is begun in a true spirit it will equip with what is necessary to be explorers. Always remember, though, that those who climb Mount Everest begin in the foot hills
